Artist Statement
Painting always came naturally to me. I have always been fascinated by light and by shadow, by the variety of landscapes and by the complexities of the human figure. In my travels in Europe and North America, I try to capture that which is distinct about the places I visited: the quality of the light and amazing blue color of the Greek sky, the alpine glow at sunset on the mountains in California, the harbors of Maryland, the texture of walls, old and new, in Berlin, the open skies of the American Midwest, the human bustle of the streets in Paris, the northern sun of the Canadian summer, or the sunbathed rolling hills and crisp mountain shadows of my native Romania. Thus, in my watercolors and oil paintings I highlight one scene at a time from the immense canvas of nature and bring it to the fore, for people to become aware again of the amazing beauty surrounding them.
My biggest artistic inspirations are the Impressionists: Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Paul Cezanne, Berthe Morissot, or Mary Cassat Like them, I strive to capture the subtle balance between line and color, shape and value, space, form and texture. I also owe a lot to the works of American painter Winslow Homer, whose breathtaking watercolors are always a model to me in their vibrant use of color, of light and his ability to capture the story behind a scene.
I paint in oil and in watercolor, although I also experiment with mixed media. My works mirror the world surrounding us, and I always try to convey in my paintings some of my energy and love for life. I see my paintings as frozen memories, that are supposed to do more than merely capture a scene ; they should also convey to you, the viewer, the same emotions and state of mind that the sight of the actual landscape evoked in myself when painting it.
Bio
I was born and educated in Romania, Eastern Europe, and I have painted since I was a child. I studied painting for four years in Craiova, Romania, specializing in figurative art, landscape and portraiture. After moving to the United States, I continued to practice as an independent artist, as well as a writer and illustrator of children's books, in parallel with my teaching career.
