Artist Statement
Feelings of nostalgia, abandonment, loss, and singular moments in time fill the scenes in Nathun Finkhouse's artwork. There is a sense of fragility in scenes of weathered, barely standing barns and rusty cars beyond repair. Nathun is interested in these objects that at one time were used daily, but now are long forgotten. Many of the barns in Nathun's work are almost moments away from falling over into a heap of rotten boards and corroded scraps of metal. Nathun's job as an artist is to capture singular moments in time that are ever fleeting.
Through numerous commissions, Nathun has also built a large stable of pet portraits. Capturing the unique personality of a dog, cat, or horse brings Nathun great joy. Sadly, the majority of these pets have passed away which gives Nathun the task of freezing a moment in time.
Artwork of all kinds has the power to not only capture a moment in time, but also heighten and bring added drama to the moment. As personal emotions and memories alter a moment in time, the use of impressionist techniques of vivid color and contrast can capture a scene that is both rooted in reality and also informed by personal perceptions.
