Artist Statement
My name is Mary Lin Watanabe and my goal as a visual artist is to create sensual and expressive images that connect with humanity. It is my intention to illuminate conventional subjects to extraordinary imagery through unique perspective and composition. My creative journey typically starts with studies of drawing, pastel or watercolor, and it morphs into paintings in oil or acrylic. My hope is to share with viewers and patrons the sublimity of emotions and unique perspectives through my expression, and the subtle story each painting may convey through the beauty of our nature.
I fell in love with art at a very young age. Amazed with the feeling and freedom to express through art, I felt rewarded with the vision of my creation. It became a lifetime passion to express visually the complex emotions & stories that couldn’t be put into words. I received my fine art degree from CSUN, specializing in studio art of oil painting. My thesis portfolio revolved around a series of street lights, many of which were found in Porter Ranch landscapes. Academically, I’m an educational docent at Getty Center and an art instructor at Pierce College and Online Workshops.
At the Getty Museum, I often encourage viewers to have a "closer look" in the hopes that the viewers will receive insight or connect with the art pieces. Hopefully, my art collection will evoke the emotion that connects us to nature and the joy to celebrate its beauty.
With gratitude, my creative passion continues.
Bio
Mary Lin Watanabe’s goal as a visual artist is to create sensual and expressive images that connect with humanity. It is her intention to illuminate conventional subjects through extraordinary imagery, unique perspective, and distinctive composition. Mary specialized in oil painting with an earlier portfolio series of street lights, memorable landscapes, and macro botanical paintings. Recently, her prolific collection of watercolor and pastel paintings are becoming a joint creative journey for her to share her visions and expressions.
Every painting is a journey with the mix-mediums as the preliminary layers. Mary creates a multitude of layers and textures to express her vision. Mary also utilizes mediums like pastel and acrylics as the base layers of her primary painting layers for most of her oil paintings. Ultimately, there are so many hidden paintings in her finished oil paintings.
Grateful with her Asian heritage, she has incorporated much of Asia and some Asian influences many of the Asia influences into her art pieces. Borrowing the Eastern fluid techniques in botanical watercolor paintings has created unique impacts on Mary's own watercolor paintings. It’s about embracing the cultures she demonstrated in many of her recent paintings. In her recent visit to New Mexico, she enjoyed painting rich and colorful western landscapes with the Buddhist Zen concept of "impermanence". This was demonstrated using a juxtaposition of a wooden surface with a disappearing subject.
Mary believes in the gift of creativity as each artist will ultimately express their art uniquely through composition, color/value, textures, etc.. The recent events around the world have lent opportunity for artists to become more insightful and seek introspective meaning through their work. Her paintings are about telling a story with her passion and her perspective using images that one wouldn’t be able to express with words.
