Artist Statement/Bio
Throughout Karen's life, she has experimented with many types of traditional art media including pastel, oil, watercolor, colored and graphite pencils, and clay sculpture, as well as computer and electronic media technologies. She enjoys working with color in any medium but she especially enjoy the challenges in working with soft pastel, pastel pencil, colored pencil, and ink.
Karen Conger specializes in pastel, colored pencil, and ink paintings and drawings which are offered as limited edition fine art prints or commissioned art. Karen has utilized her artistic ability throughout her professional life in secondary and higher education including co-authoring and illustration of several secondary math courses for the PASS program in California. She has been self-employed since 1996 as a qualitative research consultant providing services for qualitative researchers and doctoral level graduate students. She has found there are many creative and innovative parallels between the roles of educator and artist with each enhanced by the other. She is now consciously balancing her time between these two professions.
As an educator, Karen understands the value of education and training and finds it increasingly valuable to her as she devotes more time to painting and drawing. Higher education degrees include Ph.D.-Philosophy, MA Education-Curriculum and Instruction, and BSBA Finance-Management Science Option. Art training includes certification in illustration and drawing and multiple supplementary courses and workshops to refine her skills and knowledge. These have included online coursework from London Art College as well as on-site workshops in Surrey, England; American Academy of Equine Art at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington; Scottsdale Artists School in AZ; and portraiture drawing at University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Karen continues to learn from skilled artists in a variety of workshops and courses specializing and focusing in the art media and genres she prefers.
