Artist Statement/Bio
Watercolor has always intrigued me. I love the dynamic nature of the medium in that it participates in the creation of the art. The flow and blending of watery paint on paper can create amazing effects unattainable with other media. I paint intuitively, in the moment, and let the painting tell me the direction it needs to go. As an artist, I strive to create emotional impact through atmosphere and storytelling. It is important that I convey my personal connection and interpretation of the subject through my brushwork. Hopefully, the result is not necessarily "pretty" paintings but ones that have emotional appeal and resonate with others.
Judy is a self-taught artist, coming from a family of artists including her mother, artist Juanita Watkins Moore. Judy’s professional art journey did not begin until later in life after commitments to family, nursing and business careers slowed down. She began a self-directed art education traveling to study with master artists whom she felt could help her develop certain aspects of her art. Strong influences include Charles Reid, Joseph Zbukvic, Mary Whyte and Dean Mitchell.
Judy is a juried member of the Southern Watercolor Society, Kentucky Watercolor Society, the Kentucky Arts Council’s Kentucky Crafted Program, Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen, and is an associate member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, and the Portrait Society of America. She was named KWS Master Artist of the Year for 2019.
