Artist Statement/Bio
My painting practice is mainly focused on landscape and how to convey the emotion and mood inherent in that magical place where land meets sky - the horizon. This theme has become an intuitive departure point in my work which lies somewhere between realism and abstraction. I hope that my memories and imagination create landscapes that the viewer can imbue with their own associative thoughts and feelings. I also enjoy exploring purely abstract ideas as well. I admire the Impressionists and Abstract Expressionists. My influences include, but certainly are not limited to, Monet, O'Keeffe, Turner, Inness, Rothko, Helen Frankenthaler and Jane Wilson. Working in oil and cold wax as well as acrylic, I relish the happy accidents which are always an inspiration to me.
The following quote by Seth Godin echoes my hopes and desires around my own need to create: "Art is a personal gift that changes the recipient. The medium doesn't matter. The intent does. Art is a personal act of courage, something one human does that creates change in another."
My journey of art-making began at the age of eighteen with my first camera. It was a joy to look through the viewfinder and compose my own world then see the image come to life in the darkroom. I have been creating images ever since in a variety of media including collage, printmaking, and, my main focus, painting. I have advanced my creative practice through workshops, university fine art courses, private mentoring and self-study. At the age of fifty I received my Masters in Social Work. During my years as a psychotherapist I continued to create my own art and encouraged my clients to consider expression through art. Since retiring I am now in my studio full-time. My original passion remains the same, to revel in the joy of creation and, hopefully, bring the viewer along with me.
