Artist Statement/Bio
My passion in painting is finding emotion and mood in landscapes or seascapes through the sensitive use of color and texture. I work in oil paint mixed with cold wax medium as well as acrylics. Focusing on an ever-changing horizon line has become an intuitive departure point in my work which hovers between realism and abstraction. I describe my style as intuitive expressionism. My paintings are inspired by nature but emerge from memories and imagination, rather than specific references, in hopes of creating atmospheric images open to interpretation. My process is one of call and response as each mark and color build to more as the work progresses and I discover where the painting is taking me. My influences include Monet, O’Keeffe, Turner, Inness, Rothko, Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Eardley and Jane Wilson. The following quote by Seth Godin echoes my hopes and desires around my own need to create: “Art is a personal gift that changes the recipient. The medium doesn’t matter. The intent does. Art is a personal act of courage, something one human does that creates change in another.”
My journey of artmaking began at the age of eighteen with my first camera. I found joy in composing my own world through the viewfinder then seeing that world come to life in the darkroom. Photography led to explorations of other media and painting became my primary focus. Since retiring from my psychotherapy practice, I paint daily in my home studios located in East Aurora, NY and Naples, FL.
Exhibiting in regional, national and international juried exhibitions since 1994.
