Artist Statement/Bio
For as long as I can remember I’ve always needed room to breathe; to reflect, to feel the physical space around me, which then allows me to feel the intellective and emotional space around me. I grew up in an over-populated and stimulating environment within the walls of my family’s home. Even though we resided in generous living quarters, there was a lack of space and feeling of quiet: which was taken away by the continuous comings and goings of people. Whether it was for work or friends of my parents or the repairman fixing the same thing that he didn’t finish the week or month or year prior, it always seemed to eat away at what I saw as precious and much needed room to simply just be, to breath!
Therefore, in my landscape photography, I am most attracted by sprawling and expansive natural habitats. Perhaps a house or two in an isolated and dramatic setting. I relish the feeling of being able to look for miles down a beach or in the Moors of Nantucket and not see another living soul, except, of course, the animals that belong to that habitat. It gives me great pleasure to see them living their life; which I try my best to observe as a non-invasive entity in their domain.
My other love for landscape photography is the light, how complex it can be and how it can change an environment so completely. Being able to capture that in a photograph is a defining moment for me. It is an imperative component of the story I am telling.
Life is chaotic in so many ways, a thousand layers interweaving simultaneously. Finding that sense of peace and strength in being alone in the vastness of nature while telling a story through my photographs sustains my soul.
