Artist Statement/Bio
In my landscape paintings, my goal is to capture the “magic” of art through an original vision. The varied symbols of escape, isolation, strength, beauty, romance and mystery provides an endless source of inspiration.
I use the traditional characteristics of naïve movement: vibrant colors, unusual perspectives, exaggerated scale and a touch of whimsy. The content is based on intuition, tapping into my appreciation for the land and places of the heart.
Each painting is a glimpse into a new world of timeless charm and simplicity where I invite the viewer to experience the celebration of the human spirit.
In my abstract work I use the power of the brush and line to develop the challenge of working in the abstract non-representational format, essentially creating something from nothing. My abstract paintings are intended to take the viewer on a meditative journey. My artistic influences in this genre are the abstract expressionists.
Ellen is a 3rd generation Californian currently living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. During her 1st year of College, her formal art education was disrupted by the death of her parents, leaving her with other obligations. However, she continued to pursue her artistic interests on her own. Ellen considered her main interest to be painting but expanded her education by taking printmaking classes at UCLA.
As a painter, monoprints and collage became an extension of her work and combined both mediums inter changeably. Ellen always fluctuated between abstraction and more figurative formats to “mix it up a bit” and has done several series using these disciplines.
Ellen’s are work in included in numerous corporate and private collections including the US State Dept, The Pentagon and the Makuhari-Messe Convention Center in Toyko, Japan. Through her affiliation with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art rental gallery she has sold over 70 works of art.
