Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas framed in dark wood floater frame 16 x 20 $1500 Member of the Arikara tribe. The ornamental pieces on her dress are made of elk teeth. There are only four of these particular teeth in each elk. The number of teeth on her dress suggests a high status in the tribe. |

Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas 16 x 20 $1200 Portrait of a Navajo (Dine’) woman weary from “The Long Walk” in which the US Army forcibly removed the tribe from their ancestral lands in Arizona to Fort Sumner. It was a 400 mile walk and many perished along the way. The army offered them no assistance and had no empathy for their plight. |

Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas 16 x 20 $1200 Portrait of Baby Lone, a Kickapoo Medicine Man in Oklahoma, circa 1917, with a proud mane of long hair that was important in many tribes. It was believed that long hair represents a strong cultural identity that promotes self-esteem, self-respect, a sense of belonging, and a healthy sense of pride. But he cut his hair and joined the army to fight in World War I. He employed his native skills in stealth and tracking to give his fellow soldiers an advantage over the enemy. |
Stoic
Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas 16 x 20 $1200 Portrait of Elle Ganado who was recognized as a master weaver of the Navajo (Dine’) tribe in New Mexico. In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt stopped in Albuquerque while on a speaking tour through the western territories. The Commercial Club of Albuquerque chose Elle Ganado, to weave a textile rendition Commercial Club membership card. Club members provided the design, which Elle wove quickly in hand-spun red, white, and blue yarn. The portrait conveys the strength and stoicism of a woman who endured a tumultuous time with strength and pride in her craft. |

Our Mother Weeps
Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas 16 x 20 $1200 Our Mother Weeps conveys the sadness with which the indigenous peoples viewed the disregard the white man had for the earth, our mother. The natives always lived as a PART OF nature but the settlers/invaders lived APART FROM nature. |
Artist Statement
I create portraits of the indigenous peoples of North America. I research my subjects to ensure historical accuracy of the era, the tribe, their clothing and their culture. I use a unique color palette of five colors. The palette suggests the antiquity of a sepia tone photo but presents with a bright, contemporary look. I was inspired to focus on this subject after traveling to remote, off-the-grid reservations on behalf of a native owned firm selling office and school supplies.
I paint my subjects "to give a voice to those who have been silenced, to give eyes to those who do not see and to give a heart to those who do not want to care." In so doing, it is my subtle soapbox to remind people of America's original sin of stolen land and slaughter of the first inhabitants of this land.
It has been said that "art should disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed." In some small way I hope that my work might comfort those who remember and disturb those who would like to forget.
