Artist Statement/Bio
"My current body of work, consists of portraits from my travels to different cultures. I choose to paint portraits because I see them as psychological and spiritual in nature.
While I am painting, I aspire to make a statement about the intimate nature of whom I see. I wish to invite my viewer’s imagination to witness these impressions and to be captivated as I have been.
I practiced the art of psychotherapy for 39 years. and had the honor of glimpsing into the hearts and souls of my clients Now I glimpse into another’s hearts, while I capture my impressions with a paint brush and camera. I let my inner muse communicate what I see with the hope others can see the wonder I experienced."
Ani Dylan is an expressionistic figurative and portrait artist. She lives and works in Newport Beach, California.
Ani has had a 39-year career as a Psychologist with specialties in expressive art therapy and spiritual psychology. As an Art Therapist, she has witnessed hundreds of clients reveal themselves though their art for as Picasso so wisely said: “Painting a picture is like writing a diary.” Ani believes that creativity has a spiritual component and makes itself known in any art form. Ani aspires to paint to create the emotional and spiritual aspects of her subject, as well as her impressions of what she witnesses.
In semi-retirement, Ani studies fine art painting and drawing at Laguna College of Art and design, and completes a Post-Baccalaureate in 2018.
Ani is drawn to the human figure and portrait. She finds many of her images as she travels to different cultures with a camera in her hand. When she notices a face, an expression, or a stance that captures both her attention and imagination, she snaps a photo and paints her impressions. She believes the true beauty of a portrait or figure is both psychological and spiritual in nature. She wishes to invite viewers imaginations to see beyond the obvious into the inner soul of her subjects. Her goal is to paint an accurate and eloquent expression of what she has witnessed with her own eyes and what she has experienced within.
