Artist Statement/Bio
"In my current paintings, the premise is to make a balanced dialog between the intellectual and emotional. I paint the geography of where I find myself, in the United States or overseas in Britain, Ireland and recently, Jamaica. These places are eclectic and don’t always have any deep affinity for me, yet there is a bond … these works were made on site and in the studio. The medium I work with varies – oil, acrylic, tempera and collage. However, the goal is always the same: to make an equivalent and authentic response to the places I have experienced, and to then translate that experience of the three-dimensional landscape to the flat surface of my paintings."
Andrew Wykes was born in the UK just outside of London. He studied at Richmond upon Thames College, and Epsom School of Art and Design where he received his undergraduate qualifications in fine art. His graduate studies were completed at American University, Washington, DC where he received his MFA in painting. He has taught art for thirty years in schools and colleges in the UK, Belgium and the US. Andrew has shown his work nationally and internationally including London and in New York. He is a recipient of three Minnesota State Arts Board Initiative Awards in 2009 and 2013, and 2015 he was awarded a fellowship at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Mayo, Ireland, and is featured in the documentary film “ Painting the Place Between”. Andrew is currently an a full Professor and chair of the studio arts and art history department at Hamline University in St Paul.

Workshops/Classes Offered
Drawing from the Landscape
The workshop is mainly intended for intermediate and advanced artists with a desire to develop further. Andrew Wykes will provide group and individualized instruction and criticism. Discussions and presentations will provide the format for an intensive exciting learning experience. The focus is on the landscape and sea of this part of North Mayo, by experiencing at first hand our reaction to the magic of the place and its rich visual and atmospheric setting.
Wykes will present a series of ideas and explorations based on the perceptual and process in the studio and outside in order to understand that abstraction is the foundation behind ALL drawing and painting. Working from small drawings made in the landscape that will be developed into larger drawing investigations made in the studio. This will be the integral focus of the course. The drawings will not only be made with graphite, but extending the idea of drawing into the use of wet medium of acrylic and tempera paint. Wykes’ teaching is not concerned with techniques or embellishing a safe stereo typical style but more with an approach to developing a transitional way of working while improving upon the student's understanding of the formal elements. Sessions will address many of these elements including; the picture plane, shape, tension, surface, figure ground relationships, geometry, rhythm, space and light and especially analogy - the poetic emotive force behind our work.
The cost is $1,750 which includes tuition, shared cottage with private bedroom for 8 nights, lunch/dinner/dessert/tea/coffee, collection/delivery to the bus/train stations in Ballina, full use of the Ballinglen library and facilities 24/7. Payment is made to The Artist in Rural Ireland Fund using the payment button on the website www.ballinglenworkshops.com. Participants arrive on the 5th and depart on the 13th of June (The workshop is for seven days with arrival and departure day making it nine days). Please contact Andrew Wykes on [email protected] with question about workshop content or materials and Una Forde on [email protected] for availability and booking form.
