Growing up all I wanted to be was a cartoonist-any type, because I studied all of them. I loved Jack Davis of Mad Mag and the political cartoons.
After I graduated with a BFA from Pratt with a major in illustration, I now was studying all the great illustrators. I became one at the beginning of my career. I did cartoons and humorous illustrations. These days when I travel I do pen and ink “portraits”, I call them Icons. This was a recent show of my icons. I started getting into great painters and the pop art of the 80’s. Although I love all pop art. When I moved to California 20 years ago my focus went to the beautiful landscapes all around. Then the ocean scapes. I’ve been painting realistic land and sea scapes for over 20 years, always acrylic on canvas. Now I’ll experiment in between, on my website you’ll see two different styles both based on pop/modern art. But i always go back to painting ‘scapes and doing black and white icons. I can see my color work is evolving into a very stylized realism that is so much fun for me. Each one I try and challenge myself somewhere in it. The other cool thing that’s happened is my photos for the pieces are getting better and I see my style in photos changing. By the way I shoot all my own reference photos, but one piece may be using up to four or five different photos. Photo is influencing my painting work in a positive way.
I love art, all types, I study it and I’m so passionate as an artist, have been since I started loving cartoonists. I am so thankful that I have a great creative career. I’m also a video game director with dozens and dozens of awards including two Best Action Game of the Year (2008, 2012) and two BAFTA’s and nominated for nine. But enough about me:)
